The mission of BETZATA COMMUNITY is to create the Community of life with mentally disabled persons based on mutual relationships between people with and without disabilities; to create the Community which could be open place for meeting, the Community in whish each person – having a disability or not – could make grow and share his or her gifts, the Community which could become a place for personal transformation and the place witnessing that each person has an unique value.
BETZATA COMMUNITY seeks to be an integral part of the local village - Čekoniškės - community, to make good relationships with the neighbors. It also seeks to respond to our days society need for the relationships of communion. It seeks to answer the needs of rejected people and give them back their place in the society, to create community based on the principle of a humane society where the weak is accepted. It seeks to create also a community of faith, which is deeply rooted in prayer and which learns to trust in God. We believe that each person despite his or her gifts or his or her handicap is important and has a natural right to experience friendship and communion.
BETZATA COMMUNITY is based on Christian values. It is probational member of l’Arche (www.larche.org) since 2013. We work, celebrate and pray together, experience the joy to be together. Also we welcome Community guests, friends, and always take care of friendly relationships.
The heart of BETZATA COMMUNITY is the House for mentally disabled adults based on fraternal relationships. The House is being created together with the adults, having little or stronger disability. For now there are six disabled persons and five assistants living together in the House.
Some of Martynas - the first person with mental disability in the House - wisdom is saying: “The advantage of the community life is not to stray from God.” “…life is so good here – you risk to “miss” your disability. But if only I lose this place I again become disabled, because this good life would be ended…” “Gentle person never troubles, because he/she has the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
The first Betzata House was being reconstructed gradually. Over the period of 5 years it was fully reconstructed and the second building in the farmstead was partly reconstructed. Creating Community and relationships always goes in parallel with reconstructing works of the House and it’s surrounding.
BETZATA COMMUNITY organizes active social integration activities where young people from social risk group, volunteers, families, Community friends, mentally disabled adults collaborate mutually. We organize various events throughout the year: the celebrations, the self-help group activities, the volunteering activities in the Community homestead, the cultural events etc. In summer Betzata Community organizes Work and Evangelization Summer Camps, International Summer Camps.
These lines in the Gospel of Saint John (Jn 5, 1-9) inspired to choose the name for the "new born" Community:
1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Hebrew called Bethza'tha, which has five porticoes. 3 In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, paralyzed. 4 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him and knew that he had been lying there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?" 7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is troubled, and while I am going another steps down before me." 8 Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your pallet, and walk." 9 And at once the man was healed, and he took up his pallet and walked.
Volunteers participate in the life of the Living Home and in other activities. They contribute to the community's life by taking part in activities of various types and duration.
